171 Suzana COHA ANTUN GUSTAV MATOŠ (1873. – 1914.) Summary A. G. Matoš – Homeland, Nation, Identity This paper presents an analysis and interpretation of Matoš’s journalistic and lite- rary representations of national identity, stressing the central place that the idea of homeland had in them. This idea was, on the one hand, directly motivated by the specific socio-political situation in Croatia during the Croatian-Hungarian Settle- ment, which influenced Matoš’s biography as well. On the other hand, it was also developed in a dialogue with the existing tradition of Croatian patriotic literature. Matoš’s representations of the homeland and national identity were thus complex, critical and artistically impressive, and they reflected his political orientation and his individual poetics. As such, they have now themselves become a recognizable and influential part of the aforesaid tradition of Croatian patriotic literature. Key-words: Antun Gustav Matoš, national identity, Croatia, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, France, Matoš’s poetics, politics of the Croatian Party of Rights, tradition of Croatian patriotic literature.
